STORE CLOSING / FICTIONAL EXAMPLE Source: SOP-014, four pages. Runtime: 3:00. Start here A good close does more than lock the door. It leaves the next team a location that's ready to open, with clear records and no surprises. Here's the four-step closing routine. Before you begin Begin after the last customer has left and the closing lead confirms it's time. Have the closing checklist, register report, and handoff log ready. Only authorized staff handle cash and security. 01 / Reset First, reset the floor. Work through the sales floor, service area, and staff area in that order. Return items to their assigned places, clear walkways, and clean approved surfaces using the site's instructions. 01 / Reset Restock opening supplies where stock is available. If something is missing or damaged, record the exact item and location in the handoff log. Escalate an immediate hazard using the site's emergency procedure. Don't leave it as a routine note. 02 / Reconcile Next, reconcile the register. Authorized staff count the drawer using the local cash-handling procedure and compare the count with the closing report. Record the actual amount counted, not the amount you expected. 02 / Reconcile If the amounts don't match, recount once. If the difference remains, record it and notify the closing lead. Keep reconciliation marked as an exception until the lead gives the next instruction. Quick check Quick check. The report says four hundred eighty dollars. The drawer still holds four hundred seventy after a recount. Do you change the report, mark it complete, or record the difference and tell the lead? Quick check / Answer Record the ten-dollar difference and tell the lead. Accurate records matter more than a checklist that only looks complete. 03 / Hand off Now complete the handoff. For each unresolved issue, include what happened, where it happened, who owns the next action, and when it needs attention. Keep customer information and security codes out of the general log. 03 / Hand off Review outstanding items with the closing lead. Get their acknowledgment and record the time. If the lead is unavailable, use the designated backup contact. Don't assume that sending a message completes the handoff. 04 / Secure Finally, authorized staff complete the local security procedure. Confirm everyone has left the areas being secured, check assigned access points, and set the alarm if required. If a lock or alarm fails, stop and contact the designated lead. Don't mark the location secure. Ready for the next shift Finish by signing and time-stamping the closing checklist. Carry forward any exception and the lead's instructions. Reset, reconcile, hand off, secure. One consistent close gives the next shift a clear place to start.
